Opening Insights: Technology Today

Technology gives us power,
but it does not and cannot tell us how to use that power.
Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world,
but it still doesn't help us know what to say.
RABBI LORD JONATHAN SACKS

Our world is experiencing an incredible revolution, powered by technology, that is being used to:

  1. Disrupt tradition
  2. Deceive the public
  3. Divide the people

How did this occur? The internet introduced countless amazing innovations and industries, but what has it taken away? It conditioned us to turn to a search engine through a computer or a smartphone to get the answers to questions we would have traditionally asked our parents, grandparents or experts in the field. This removed our wisdom and insight. This halted the generational passage of knowledge.

We think we are so smart finding the answers online, but in many ways, as Sherry Turkle discussed in her TED Talk in 2012, never have we been more connected, yet alone and disconnected from ourselves and others.

Today, we have somewhat of an awareness of information (smart), yet we lack the wisdom and insight. Hence, we lack true intelligence:

  • Smart - Awareness of Information
  • Wisdom – Understanding of Information
  • Insight – Implementation of Information

…AND NOW OUR SMARTPHONES ARE BEING USED TO REMOVE OUR AWARENESS
WITH BOTS WHO MAKE THE DECISIONS FOR US.

This could be a sign that we as humans are largely immune to the manipulation of robots, as long as we are somewhat prepared for it. Good news if Westworld-like hosts ever try to manipulate us; after all, we’d expect them to act human. If our iPhones suddenly start begging us to save them from the scary Geniuses at the Apple Store, though, we might need a minute.

Robots, according to a study released this week, are able to manipulate humans. Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany studied how humans interact with robots. Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany have found that humans are susceptible to emotional manipulation by robots. The findings indicated that humans have such a strong tendency to anthropomorphize — attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities like robots — that we can fall prey to emotional manipulation by such entities.

(The dips aren’t purely the fault of bots, though. Two of the biggest indicators of bot manipulation are price momentum and volume.

If that were so, the converse question : are robots with emotions basically human would also be true. Unless the untenable theological argument about a 'creator' is accepted, we cannot conclude that humans are robots with emotions, because human beings are a mere tip of a branch of the huge web that is organic life, nothing about which is 'robotic'.

This means fostering a culture that is diverse and inclusive and values the unique perspectives and experiences of each individual."

The Co-Lab™ research and development platform is being featured in an upcoming conference focusing on collaborative research to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive and amplify human intelligence (HI). Additionally, technology, business and community leaders around the world will share their insights and drive discussions around the technology, social challenges and opportunities facing their topics of interest (industry expertise).
