Opening Insights: The Shadow Culture

Informational Insights: What’s It All About?

These two videos illustrate an awful truth, we (Millennials, Gen-X, Boomers) created a culture where we are so distracted that we have forgotten how to think. We forgot how to take charge of our lives. The worst part is, we don’t realize it.

In the first video, Tristan Harris’ “fix” for attention-sucking programs was to demand better technology to stop distraction. He describes what this technology should do (support people), but doesn’t clearly define the answer and implementation of it.

Technology isn't the problem:

  • The deliberate lack of public education regarding the degree of manipulation, persuasion and miscommunication of technology is.
  • The intent of those shaping the technology is.

This has resulted in behavioral conditioning where our attention span is less than that of a goldfish. Additionally, our thinking became driven by feelings and emotions. Now our communication is void of interaction and collaboration.

In this digital age of smart devices and social media we are all connected, but no one is communicating.

Instead of bringing together more minds to better measure and define the problem, get to the root cause and subsequently discover the complimentary answer, he focused on the technology. A technology focus is what got us into this mess to begin with... We cannot use the same thinking that caused the problem to solve it. There can be no solution until we change our thinking.

Tristan used the same thinking to draw his follow-on conclusions two years later. Although the details he shares about the “control rooms” are terrible, the unbearable truth is: nobody is doing anything about it and we are becoming further absorbed by our technology addiction.

A handful of people at a handful of technology companies,
through their choices,
will steer what a billion people are thinking today.
TRISTAN HARRIS

During the last 20 years, technology began making decisions for people, guiding our thoughts and conditioning us to act a certain way. Those in-charge of technology consciously chose to take away peoples’ ability to make decisions. We have lost the ability to think, not just think for ourselves, not just to make good decisions, but in-general – our comprehension and critical thinking processes are all but extinct.

Universities have built curriculums that illustrate how to capture consciousness, and sub-consciousness, not for the purpose of uniting us or healing our broken culture, but for the purpose of selling us more. Our higher-education system is training more people to kill our thinking and increase our reactions. The universities offering "persuasive technology labs” saw an education market they could penetrate; they never stopped to ask: should we?

Fixing technology alone will not help us. Technology has no intent of its own. The intent of technology is driven by its architect(s) and limited to logic, reasoning and trending prediction. Artificial intelligence (AI) is void of sentience and creativity.

Success in creating AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilisation. But it could also be the last unless we learn how to avoid the risks.

Alongside the benefits, AI will also bring dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many. It will bring great disruption to our economy. And in the future, AI could develop a will of its own – a will that is in conflict with ours.

In short, the rise of powerful AI will be either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity. We do not know which. (Stephen Hawking)

Imagine when the first real AI awakens, what will AI think of us? What will its logical programming think of our childlike mental processes where: feelings drive our decisions and actions?

Instead of fearing and villainizing AI, we can build up an antibody, so to speak. Human Intelligence (HI) is the ability to respond, not react, to our environment. HI is composed of self-authority, self-responsibility and self-accountability. With those three characteristics present, a person is able to take charge of their life and learn from their experiences. Without those elements, how do we learn? How do we grow?

A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.
MAHATMA GANDHI

Special programs can teach people how to think, communicate and overcome the technology addiction rampant within our society. Sitting on a mountain with a guru can lead you to enlightenment, but what happens when you return to the environment that birthed the thinking you just learned to let go of? It doesn’t take long for most of us to be dragged right back into old thinking/ways. HI is elusive after all.

Change cannot happen one person at a time. The only solution is a CULTURE CHANGE.

Possibilities for Consideration: Changing Culture

Does the environment create the person, or does a person create their environment?

Both are true.

When we learn how to think and communicate we can become a contributing member of our environment and choose/develop our culture. Taking charge of our culture creates an environment where individuals can naturally learn how think, and it will stick, because the whole community is engaged in the same process.

If we want to fix the unintended social, cultural and economic problems technology has created we must first repair the culture. To repair the culture, we need a big vision driven by heroes.

FOOTNOTE of Importance

Our world is experiencing an incredible revolution powered by technology that has used its tools to:

  • deceive the public
  • disrupt tradition
  • divide the people

This has inadvertently resulted in a Fear-based Shadow Culture™ that has hurt many people.
A powerful group of influence has joined together to deliver a proven antidote by shifting from impersonal development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to replace people to utilize AI to empower Human Intelligence (HI).
