Malone <em>on December 10, 2014, published by <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/12\/what-happens-to-society-when-robots-replace-workers\">Harvard Business Review<\/a><em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We have republished this content in respect of the author\u2019s vision, message and research.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>The technologies of the past, by replacing human muscle, increased the value of human effort \u2013 and in the process drove rapid economic progress.\u00a0Those of the future, by substituting for man\u2019s senses and brain, will accelerate that process \u2013 <strong>but at the\u00a0risk of creating millions of citizens who are simply unable to contribute economically, and with\u00a0greater damage to\u00a0an already declining middle class.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Informational Insights<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>Estimates of general rates of technological progress are always imprecise, but it is fair to say that, in the past, progress came more slowly. <a href=\"\/\/www.amazon.com\/Education-Henry-Adams\/dp\/1500587303\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1417447300&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=The+Education+of+Henry+Adams\">Henry Adams<\/a>, the historian, measured technological progress by the power generated from coal, and estimated that power output doubled every ten years between 1840 and 1900, a compounded rate of progress of about 7% per year.\u00a0The reality was probably much less. For example, in 1848, the world record for rail speed reached <a href=\"\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Land_speed_record_for_rail_vehicles\">60 miles per hour<\/a>. A century later, commercial aircraft could carry passengers at speeds approaching <a href=\"\/\/hypertextbook.com\/facts\/2002\/JobyJosekutty.shtml\">600 miles per hour<\/a>, a rate of progress of only about 2% per year.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, progress today comes rapidly. Consider the numbers for\u00a0information storage density in computer memory. Between 1960 and 2003, those densities increased by a factor of five <em>million<\/em>, at times progressing at a rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Magnet+disc+storage+densities+1960&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hs=6S2&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;channel=s&amp;hl=en&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=y7AYVKqXO-rGiwLTtoHwCw&amp;ved=0CCkQsAQ&amp;biw=1099&amp;bih=1030#facrc=_&amp;imgdii=_&amp;imgrc=qL3sUPUM9jpG2M%253A%3B-IW9InOC12fgQM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.kk.org%252Fthetechnium%252Fz_ibm_arealdensityhistory.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fkk.org%252Fthetechnium%252F2009%252F07%252Fwas-moores-law%252F%3B450%3B338\">60% per year<\/a>. At the same time, true to\u00a0Moore\u2019s Law, semiconductor technology has been progressing at a 40% rate for more than 50 years.
