Time Management. Priority Management. Anger Management. \u00a0Yet, what are we really trying to manage, and what is management really all about?<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of different Management Styles and Techniques, yet with the overwhelming amount of theory and &#8220;research,&#8221; the art and science of management is still an enigma to many.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The science of people is not rocket science, it is harder\u00a0than rocket science.<br \/>\n<\/em>EDWARD TUFTE<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Informational Insights<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Breaking Down the Rocket Science<\/strong>: <strong>The two sides of the management Coin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In examining the principles of management most theories are lacking in the understanding of the word &#8220;to manage.&#8221; \u00a0According to Oxford Dictionaries &#8220;to manage&#8221; means:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. be in charge of (a business, organization, or undertaking); run:\u00a0&#8220;their elder son managed the farm&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>synonyms: be in charge of \u00b7 run \u00b7 be head of \u00b7 head \u00b7 direct \u00b7 control \u00b7<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Great! Sounds logical, however there is one glaring problem. \u00a0The synonyms for\u00a0<em>to manage<\/em>\u00a0are:\u00a0<strong>be in charge of \u00b7 run \u00b7 be head of \u00b7 head \u00b7 direct \u00b7 control.<\/strong>\u00a0There is a big, big, big difference between the two ends of the spectrum: being in charge (taking charge) versus being in control.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To be in control = expectation and fear<\/li>\n<li>To take charge = personal and collective empowerment (to lead)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Two Sides of the Management Coin<\/strong><br \/>\nThe two sides of the management coin\u00a0seem to point to a further distinction in the definition of management that being: managers versus leaders.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Managers: manage events\u00a0<\/strong>to avoid problems or deal with problems after they have occurred.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaders (Level 5 managers and leaders):<\/strong>don\u2019t manage events, they\u00a0<strong>make decisions to address problems before they occur<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to prevent probable problems down the road.\n<ul>\n<li>Level 5 leaders build up the people around them: \u201c<em>Making the dream big enough for everybody<\/em>.\u201d Richard Jorgensen<\/li>\n<li>Level 5 leaders do this by a strategic process of assessment and discernment of self and others, coming from a perspective of honesty, selflessness, purity of intention and trust in the common goals and principles.<\/li>\n<li>Level 5 leaders lead with the goals of success and problem preventment<u>\u00a0<\/u><\/li>\n<li>Level 5 leaders take charge of their live and responsibilities and support those around them in doing the same- leading by example and principles.<u><\/u><\/li>\n<li>Level 5 leaders are strong in will and vision, and are not swayed or tempted by illusions of fear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>In assessing your management and leadership style examine and ask yourself:<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Am I a manager or a decision maker?<\/li>\n<li>Do I seek and try and control everything or do I seek to understand and make decisions?<\/li>\n<li>Do I make decisions to avoid or manage problems or do I make decisions to prevent problems?<br \/>\nDo I make decisions in the moment or do I examine the\u00a0cause\u00a0and effect of all situations and experiences?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Effective managers and leaders develop and master the skills of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Level 5 Leadership<\/li>\n<li>Emotional Maturity<\/li>\n<li>Eternal Learning and Discovery<\/li>\n<li>Assessment and discernment<\/li>\n<li>Communication based on the 4I\u2019s and grounded in the 4 Absolutes<\/li>\n<li>Emotional Shared and Self-Authority, Responsibility and Accountability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Possibilities for Consideration<\/h2>\n<h3>Take a moment and examine\u2026<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As you reviewed the material above, what stood out to you?<\/li>\n<li>What is the potential impact, economically and\/or socially?<\/li>\n<li>What action is needed to stop or support this idea?<\/li>\n<li>You may want to consider whether you:\n<ul>\n<li>want to be <em>aware<\/em> of,<\/li>\n<li>should become <em>supportive<\/em> of,<\/li>\n<li>would want to be <em>active<\/em> in this topic?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Add Your Insight<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>I have been impressed with the urgency of doing.
