Social media companies know what they have done and are doing to our children, workers, culture and world. They created an addicted client base with an attention span of 8 seconds. That's one second less, and counting, than a Goldfish.<\/p>\n
Finally, countries and communities are paying attention. ...BBC News reports that Karen Bradley, the UK\u2019s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has called for social media companies to pay for the \u201cundeniable suffering\u201d that their platforms can cause. Bradley wants companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to agree to a \u201cvoluntary\u201d code of conduct and fund anti-abuse and cyber-bullying campaigns.<\/p>\n
According to Bradley, legislating her plan would take \u201cfar too long,\u201d so she has instead chosen a \u201ccollaborative approach\u201d with Internet groups and companies and believes that she sees \u201cwillingness to cooperate\u201d on their part. \u201cMany of them say: \u2018When we founded these businesses we were in our 20s, we didn\u2019t have children\u2026 now we\u2019re older and we have teenagers ourselves we want to solve this,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n
Bradley claims she believes the Internet has been a revolutionary tool in the 21st century and has acted as an \u201camazing force for good, but it has caused undeniable suffering and can be an especially harmful place for children and vulnerable people. For too long there\u2019s been behaviour online that would be unacceptable if it was face-to-face.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bradley\u2019s proposed plan includes an annual transparency report which would include:<\/p>\n
\n
- the volume of content reported to companies and the proportion taken down<\/li>\n
- how users\u2019 complaints are handled<\/li>\n
- categories of complaints, including from under-18s, women, the LGBT community or on religious grounds<\/li>\n
- information about how each site moderates content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Bradley said that legislation on the issue could be possible in the future adding that the following principles would have to underpin any changes made to law:<\/p>\n

- What is unacceptable offline, should be unacceptable online<\/li>\n
- All users should be empowered to manage online risks and stay safe<\/li>\n
- Technology companies have a responsibility to their users<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Facebook responded to Bradley\u2019s ideas, saying, \u201cOur priority is to make Facebook a safe place for people of all ages which is why we spent a long time working with safety experts like the UK Safer Internet Centre, developing powerful tools to help people have a positive experience. We welcome close collaboration between industry, experts and government to address this important issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
