The Christian Existential Emergency
Engaging and Supporting Millennials<\/h2>\n

Christianity is the perpetual quest to develop an individual relationship with God and Jesus Christ. Christians take great strides in expanding their academic understanding of scripture and the messages contained therein, but many will not be able to make the transition from reading about it in a book to putting the spiritual principles on the bottoms of their feet. Short of a spiritual experience, the medical profession reports that 9\/10 people cannot change, even when their lives depend on it. <\/p>\n

There are fewer millennial Christians than in previous generations, but those young adults who do follow Christ do so just as faithfully as older believers, according to a Barna study<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Around 8 in 10 Boomers (80%) and elders (83%) self-identify as Christians. That falls to 73% of Generation X and 64% of millennials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similar generational trends exist among the number of practicing Christians\u2014which Barna defines as self-identified Christians who attend church every month and say their faith is very important in their lives.<\/p>\n

More than 1 in 3 elders (37%) are practicing Christians, compared to 30% of Boomers, 26% of Generation X and 22% of millennials<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is against this backdrop that Barna is releasing Reviving Evangelism<\/em><\/a>, a new report based on research commissioned by Alpha USA<\/a>. This study looks at the faith-sharing experiences and expectations of Christians and non-Christians alike. Among the major findings in this report is the revelation that Christian Millennials feel especially conflicted about evangelism\u2014and, in fact, almost half believe it is wrong to share their faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Younger Christians tend to be more personally<\/em> aware of the cultural temperature around spiritual conversations. Among practicing Christians, Millennials report an average (median) of four close friends or family members who practice a faith other than Christianity; most of their Boomer parents and grandparents, by comparison, have just one. Sharing the gospel today is made harder than at any time in recent memory by an overall cultural resistance to conversations that highlight people\u2019s differences.<\/p>\n

Society today also casts a negative light on proselytization that many older Christians do not fully appreciate. As Barna found in research published in Spiritual Conversations in the Digital Age<\/em><\/a>, three out of five Christian Millennials believe that people today are more likely than in the past to take offense if they share their faith (65%)\u2014that\u2019s far higher than among Boomer Christians (28%). Millennials are also either two (Gen X) or three times more likely (Boomers and Elders) than any other generational group to believe that disagreement means judgment.<\/p>\n

Thus, when you reach out into the world, these people are not able to respond to the directive of the Great Commission.<\/p>\n

They are not able to conceive of the application of spiritual principles and are unable to attract new Christians to rise to the cause.<\/p>\n
