Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are coming under fire for their support of President Donald Trump. Former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, is facing similar threats.<\/a> The reality is, if you have stood up against those who have seized power in our world, they haven't forgotten and their agenda of erasing all opposition <\/em>should frighten you.<\/p>\n

Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are \u201ccomplicit in the big lie\u201d and \u201chave a lot of soul searching to do\u201d over their attempts to overturn the presidential election in favour of Donald Trump<\/a>, a Republican Senate colleague said on Sunday, amid growing calls for the two men to resign or be censured.<\/p>\n

Republican objections to electoral college results failed. But Cruz and Hawley were prominent among 147 representatives and senators<\/a> who backed the late-night effort on Wednesday, even after a mob incited by the president attacked the US Capitol.<\/p>\n

Five people including a police officer died amid the chaos, in which lawmakers were apparently the target of planned kidnappings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The riot has [fueled] calls for Trump to resign, as House Democrats prepare articles of impeachment. Speaking to NBC\u2019s Meet the Press on Sunday, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania became the second Republican senator to say the president had committed impeachable offences and should \u201cresign and go away as soon as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

Toomey did not call for Cruz and Hawley to quit, though he said they were \u201cgoing to have a lot of soul searching to do and the problem is they were complicit in the big lie, this lie that Donald Trump won the election in a landslide and it was all stolen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey compounded that with this notion that somehow this could all be reversed in the final moments of the congressional proceedings. So that\u2019s, that\u2019s going to be, that\u2019s going to haunt them for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

On CNN\u2019s State of the Union, he added: \u201cThey\u2019re going to pay a big price for this. I think their reputations have been affected. You\u2019ve seen the kind of reaction in the media back in their home states, so their constituents will decide the final way to adjudicate this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democrats piled in. On Saturday, Sherrod Brown, a Democratic senator from Ohio, called for Cruz and Hawley\u2019s \u201cimmediate resignations and said<\/a> they had \u201cbetrayed their oaths of office and abetted a violent insurrection on our democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they do not resign,\u201d he added, \u201cthe Senate must expel them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patty Murray of Washington, Chris Coons of Delaware and Tina Smith of Minnesota were among other Democrats to call for Cruz and Hawley to go.<\/p>\n

On Sunday Joe Manchin of West Virginia told CNN: \u201cWhether they should resign or not, I don\u2019t know [but] how they can live with themselves knowing that people have died because of their words and actions?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawley, from Missouri, was the first senator to say he would object to election results. He has condemned<\/a> the Capitol violence but was also pictured raising a clenched fist towards Trump supporters. He has defended his actions and decried<\/a> the decision by his publisher, Simon and Schuster, to cancel a forthcoming book.<\/p>\n

Hawley also objected to criticism from Joe Biden which Toomey echoed on Sunday. The president-elect invoked Hitler\u2019s propaganda minister, saying<\/a> the senators were \u201cpart of the big lie \u2026 [Joseph] Goebbels and the great lie. You keep repeating the lie, repeating the lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cruz, from Texas<\/a>, also condemned the violence and objected to Biden\u2019s comparison. He has pushed back on calls for his resignation, including from the Houston Chronicle, saying he has no regrets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I was working to do is find a way to re-establish widespread trust in the system,\u201d he claimed to his hometown paper.<\/p>\n

Other Republicans<\/a> backed off their planned objections after the Capitol violence. Manchin told CNN he admired those who put the \u201cconstitution above their own political preferences and their own political ambitions\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the Guardian columnist and former US labor secretary Robert Reich wrote<\/a> that Cruz and Hawley \u201cshould be forced to resign\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing Trump\u2019s allegations of voting fraud were false,\u201d he wrote, the two Republicans \u201cled the move to exclude Biden electors \u2013 even after the storming of the Capitol \u2013 thereby lending Trump\u2019s claims credibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States constitution says \u2018no Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress\u2019 who \u2018shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against\u2019 the constitution, \u2018or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth Cruz and Hawley are eyeing runs for the presidency in 2024. They should be barred from running.\u201d<\/p>\n
