When we attempt to share thoughts and ideas, most everybody stands in line waiting for their turn to talk. Nobody listens. There is rarely a true common objective to solve or resolve a problem. The underlying intent by people is to \u201cbe right.\u201d<\/p>\n
To solve this problem, we have gone from arbitration to collaboration with very little success. We find, there is now a continuous struggle to even define the real problem.<\/p>\n
There are many reasons why collaborative efforts fail, but the bottom line consensus predominantly circles around to a few distinct facts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Collaboration often quickly becomes a battle of ego and personality<\/li>\n
- When you are teaching (training) you are often not reaching your audience because they are not engaged; they are not part of the process nor an influencer of the conclusion<\/li>\n
- The very nature of today\u2019s approach to collaboration often results in disempowerment of the participants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>To understand this let\u2019s examine the facts about people and our culture.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
People and Culture<\/h2>\n
The nature of the human experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n

- People are social creatures<\/li>\n
- Safety in numbers is at the root of our survival beliefs<\/li>\n
- Solitary confinement is a painful form of punishment because it magnifies individual powerlessness and helplessness<\/li>\n
- Social rejection is at the root of most of our deep-seated fears because it magnifies our individual helplessness and powerlessness\n

- Speaking in public<\/li>\n
- Writing a book<\/li>\n
- Sharing a thought<\/li>\n
- Voicing an opinion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
We have been trained to separate:<\/strong><\/p>\n
- \n
- Authority (making the decision of what to do)<\/li>\n
- Responsibility (acting on the decision and doing the work)<\/li>\n
- Accountability (taking credit for the decision in the form of reward or punishment)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
This separation is the basis for developing organization and government control of the people.<\/p>\n
Personal and cultural growth is achieved by:<\/strong><\/p>\n
- \n
- The process of enlightenment: thoughts and ideas turn into decisions, actions and learning from the results<\/li>\n
- The process of empowerment: experiencing enlightenment, collectively being recognized for personal contribution and experiencing the phenomena of the idiom: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The process of being human is to experience: the process of enlightenment AND the process of empowerment:<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Seeing all choices<\/li>\n
- Making a decision (self and shared authority)<\/li>\n
- Testing the decision (is it the right decision?) through assessment and courage<\/li>\n
- Letting go of old beliefs that are no longer appropriate<\/li>\n
- Experiencing self-trust in making decisions based on clarity and conviction<\/li>\n
- Accepting others as they are (not coming to conclusions before investigation)<\/li>\n
- Discovering others from a place of honesty (the whole truth) to experience:\n
- \n
- Selflessness to see the opportunities around us<\/li>\n
- Clarity in our intentions to build a foundation for being trusted<\/li>\n
- Life in a reality-based world rooted in:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Attention – see the whole truth<\/li>\n
- Respect – not coming to conclusions without all the facts<\/li>\n
- Appreciation – finding both direct value and<\/em> intrinsic value in all things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
A Predictable Pathway<\/h2>\n
When we DON\u2019T <\/em>experience enlightenment and empowerment<\/strong> we<\/strong> feel fear<\/strong> and become dependent on things outside ourselves for the fulfillment of our 5 Basic Needs:<\/p>\n

- Survival<\/li>\n
- Freedom<\/li>\n
- Useful<\/li>\n
- Love<\/li>\n
- Identity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
It is important to note that the loss of the ability to integrate Self-Authority, Self-Responsibility and Self-Accountability into our lives results in a loss of individual and personal identity\u2026the last of our five needs.<\/em><\/p>\n
When we lose our identity, what we do becomes who we are.\u00a0 When this occurs there is an absolute desperation to maintain who we are (the false self). \u00a0Even if we cannot make our own decisions, if we get rewarded for what we do, we feel affirmed in our false sense of self.<\/p>\n
When what we do becomes who we are, people become indecisive and fearful of making decisions outside of their sphere of influence or assigned authority \u2013 for fear of failure, and more often fear of judgement, by their inner circle. \u00a0Thus, people become isolated, yet influenced.<\/p>\n
When what we do becomes who we are, we do things to get likes<\/em> and rewards<\/em> \u2013 the \u201cPavlov Effect\u201d known today as social media.<\/em><\/p>\n
A Community of Collaboration<\/h2>\n
When we experience enlightenment and empowerment we feel trust<\/strong> and become interdependent with those around us.\u00a0 We are able to focus on ourselves and create an environment of solidarity.\u00a0 The environment of solidarity results in a heightened level of personal creativity and contribution to the collective betterment of all stakeholders.<\/p>\n
This environment is found in a Collaboration Laboratory, commonly known as\u00a0a Co-Lab Institute.\u00a0 Co-Lab Institutes remove the predefined lines of authority and allows people to express their thoughts, without it being tied to their identity.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
In so doing Co-Lab Institutes provide the structure for people to focus on a common object and thus, express ideas without fear of rejection of others; or having to alter ideas based on other people\u2019s acceptance or approval.<\/p>\n
