Dear Dad,
When you told me this summer you had decided to retire I was reminded that with every ending there is the beginning of something new. What that new represents is the continued discovery of life… your life.
Growing up, you were always just my dad. I knew you worked but didn’t have the maturity or ability to appreciate your dedication and skill. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized there was a whole other world you participated in and contributed to when you left the house each morning. I can only imagine the long hours and overtime needed to “put out fires,” the efficiency and dependability that you brought to your company culture, and the interdependence with your coworkers to get things done.
I think about the pebble effect… the way your years of effort rippled through hospitals, schools, businesses and homes. You helped people every single day, in ways that impacted their daily ability to survive and be useful in the world.
The Great Wizard stood behind the red curtain somewhat hidden, yet a vital and integral part to the design and functionality of Oz. You dad, were the Great Wizard of Cable Vision. You were that wise force for so many people, your company and your trainees.
Now that I’m older I know what hard work is. I know what passion, purpose and skill are, and I know that consistency leads to wisdom. I know what it means to earn something, to be committed, to be a team player and contribute something to the world.
The poet Kahlil Gibran said: Work is love made visible.
Thank you for all your sacrifices and the many ways you provided for me and the rest of the family over the years. I recognize that it was because of your hard work that we had a roof over our head, food to eat, clothes to wear and great education. Without your hard work there wouldn’t be so many memories of fun vacations at the Cape, burgers at Bayside Diner, summers in the pool, bikes and toys. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. You have been a teacher and mentor. You have helped me discover what I value in life and attain a successful career and beautiful life.
As you continue the discovery of your life, may all your adventures and relaxation be in good health and good spirit. Please know that forever you have imprinted the values of dependability, accountability and honesty on my heart. I keep these as pockets of wisdom, which I carry with me as I discover my own life.
I have learned that good men do great things. This is called legacy.
I’m proud to be your daughter. I’m proud to watch your legacy continue. I’m so lucky to have a teacher like you in my life whose footprints guide me each day.
Thank you for all you have done, but more importantly thank you for all that you are.
Happy Retirement!
Lots of love,
Kerri
