Opening Insights: Artificial, Yes. Intelligence, well…
By far, the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is
that people conclude too early that they understand it.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) of science fiction has given us a benchmark of expectations as it relates to what AI can do and how it will act, but as it often turns out, reality is stranger than fiction.
Informational Insights: The AI We Built
In the following TED video, Janelle Shane discusses the real dangers of today’s AI. It’s not that it becomes self-aware and decides that humans are the enemy. It doesn’t devise a sinister plot to enslave us, or plug us all into a giant simulation. The real danger is one that has plagued the human race for millennia. We do not yet know how to communicate our true intentions with a system of processes that we don’t understand, nor does it understand us.

So you see, it’s likely that AI will kill us, but not in the way prophesied by science fiction. We need intelligent data scientists who can be a guiding force in the creation of these potentially fatally-powerful tools and can usher in their socially responsible development and usage.
Only through the responsible research of those with an interest in the well being of all can AI become a force for good, and more importantly, a force that won’t accidentally cause our self-driving car to run under a tractor trailer.

Being willing is not enough; we must do.
