It would be easy to say the confusion with the math problem was purely as a result of how it was written. Had the problem been written another way, there would be no question of how to solve it or which method is the correct one. It all comes down to a question of intent.
Was the intention of the math problem’s author to sow confusion, or was it to demonstrate how current problem-solving methods are different from the old ways? Perhaps it was to show us, to our faces, that we have forgotten how to think.
